The new Rural Design Centre (ruraldesigncentre.com) is bringing communities, researchers and businesses together to help solve rural issues – we’re working with a broad range of partners on a number of design missions. Due to Covid-19 we have worked with teams and individuals remotely.

We have been exploring housing issues and problems faced by people living in rural Northumberland communities.

On 16th July we want to share these challenges to help and support the development of new solutions now and into the future for the population of rural Northumberland.

Overarching Theme:
What are the current and future housing challenges facing all those living in all parts of rural Northumberland, and how do we overcome these and make the most of opportunities?

Sub Themes:
Ageing – What are the key concerns and worries of current and future ageing residents and homeowners in rural Northumberland?

New – What are the new design considerations from the residents, community design, and developer perspective?

Existing – What are the design needs to make existing housing stock fit for the next 5, 10, 25 and 50 years?

Flexibility – How might homes and services adapt to the changing needs of residents throughout their lifetime? E.g. Increased/decreased occupancy, temporary adaptations and modifications.

Community – What should be the main focus for sustaining social communities in new physical community housing?
How do we evolve existing social and physical communities into new residential areas in rural Northumberland?
