Derwent Training Association, which was founded 35 years ago, has earned an enviable reputation for its engineering apprenticeships – achieving a 98 per cent employer satisfaction score (January 2023) and is rated ‘good’ by OFSTED. Following a report released by the LEP which described a lack of leadership training in the region being a core cause of holding back productivity, the Derwent Training team decided to invest in making this available to boost the local economy.
Claire Gavaghan, CEO of Derwent Training said: “The report highlighted an opportunity for us to invest and support businesses from every sector, building on the model we have created for the engineering industry. We have appointed and experienced tutor, added new IT equipment, invested in systems and software, and are ready to welcome our first cohort.”
The new tutor, Darrin Stevens has a background in the printing industry, and has delivered leadership and management training across a range of sectors including printing, retail, education and manufacturing. He has delivered coaching and training in support of business improvement strategies with a flair for leadership development, strategic management development, team building and facilitation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership.
Claire continued: “This is a level three apprenticeship aimed at anyone in a leadership role, particularly those without formal leadership training. It covers all manner of skills such as management of self, time management, managing change and building relationships – effectively setting people up to increase their productivity and build their career.”
Employers can expect to see increased staff engagement and retention, as well as facilitating succession planning to secure the future of their businesses, and the apprenticeship is supported by Government levy funding.

Often people find themselves promoted into line management without this crucial skill set. Derwent Training’s apprenticeship in leadership offer is an excellent and practical way to build such knowledge whilst applying the learning in the workplace. Derwent Training Association is a not for profit organisation and intends to offer higher level Apprenticeships in Leadership once this level three provision is embedded.
The company provides training to apprentices, employers and individuals to build skills and improve employability across Yorkshire and the North East from its training centre in Malton, where it can offer face-to-face delivery such as level three and level four apprenticeships, as well as online delivery to upskill employees through bespoke training and CPD courses.
